Corten is a trade name for a steel alloy material originally produced by United States Steel. This material is a corrosion resistant steel, that left uncoated develops an outer layer patina.

When exposed to the atmosphere without painting, Corten steel begins to rust in the same way as ordinary steel. But soon the alloying elements in Cor-Ten steel cause a protective surface layer of fine-textured rust to form, thereby suppressing corrosion rate.
Capitalizing on this excellent property, Corten steel can be used without painting, thereby nullifying the commonly held belief that "steel must be used with paint."
The mechanical characteristics and the resistance to atmospheric corrosion make this steel, the best product for the fabrication of agricultural vans and railway wagons, structures of bridges, water pipes, fans, chimneysand boilers.
The material forms its own protective layer when exposed to atmospheric elements. Essentially, the top layer corrodes and then protects the steel beneath it. The natural finish does not normally require any form of maintenance such as painting, which makes the material a highly cost effective alternative to other structural steels.
Mainly used for construction of tanks, containers, bridges, frame structures, vehicles, etc with the request of welded, bolted, etc.
